WHO ARE JUNIOR EXPLORERS?
Junior Explorers is a fun, safe introduction to sailing for first-time or newer sailors ages 5-6. With an instructor always on the boat at the helm, sailors will gain confidence on the water through hands-on experience steering with a tiller and adjusting the jib sheets. The class is both educational and a fun, summer-camp-like experience. Sailors will learn to hoist the sail, navigate in search of treasure, and swim off the Ensign. Students wear a properly fitted, Coast Guard-approved PFD on board and while swimming. This class is sure to offer a great first impression of sailing to your little one.

WHAT’S AN ENSIGN?
The 22-foot Ensign Keelboat is an ideal boat for learning. Its stability and easy handling make it perfect for young sailors to feel comfortable on the water.

MORE DETAILS:
We place up to eight sailors per boat with an instructor, ensuring every child feels safe and supported while learning. Kids can sign up alone or with friends and will sail together in the same boat. If your kiddo is ready for a full day at the lake, you are welcome to sign up for both the morning and afternoon sessions. MSC staff will eat lunch with the kids between sessions.

It is not a guarantee that we will get out on the water each day of the session. On days when the wind is too high to be on the water safely, we play games and learn on shore.

WHAT’S NEXT?
After taking this course, sailors seven and older are ready for the half-day or full-day Opti Explorers class. Students are welcome to keep coming back to Junior Explorers as long as they are in the 5-6 age range.
