ASA 101 Keelboat Certification Test Out
SCHEDULE: Saturday 9:00 am - 2:00 pm, Sunday 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
DURATION: Two days
MEMBER: $275 (Class is only offered to MSC members)
Are you ready to take the first step towards chartering a keelboat around the Apostle Islands or even the Caribbean? Look no further than the ASA-101 Keelboat test out at the Minneapolis Sailing Center (MSC). Through a partnership with ASA-licensed affiliate Sail Away Sailing School, LLC, students can earn their ASA Keelboat 101 certification, a requirement to take the ASA 103/104 class. ASA 103/104 is commonly a prerequisite for most charter companies. To be eligible for this class, students must have earned their Green Flag certification through the MSC Beginner Keelboat class or an evaluation.
In this two-day, nine-hour course, students will practice and perfect their beginning sailing skills, such as tying knots, person-overboard maneuvers, reefing, basic navigation, and federal regulations for sailing in navigable waterways.
On day one, we will review the skills and materials included in the ASA 101 skills assessment and written test. Most of the time will be spent on the water practicing sailing skills. Time will also be spent on shore studying the materials for written tests like basic navigation and federal regs.
On the second day of the course, students will demonstrate sailing skills and take a 100-question written test. Click to read about the skills learned and requirements. After passing the skills assessment and written test, you will become a certified ASA 101 keeboat sailor. At the end of class, you will receive an ASA logbook and instructions on the next steps in your sailing education journey.
