WHAT’S AN OPTIMIST?
The 8-foot Optimist Pram is a stable, easy-to-handle boat ideal for beginners. It’s the learning boat of choice for sailing centers worldwide.
WHO ARE OPTIMIST EXPLORERS?
Optimist Explorers is designed for first-time or newer sailors, ages 7-11, looking for a fun and safe introduction to sailing. Sailors will build confidence while sailing with a partner or two. In this Summer Camp environment, they’ll learn the basics of sailing through games and adventures.
The Half-Day class is ideal for younger kids who prefer a shorter camp, while Full-Day sailors are ready for a full, action-packed day, including a one-hour lunch break at the lake.

The half-day camps and full-day camps are separate groups. Given the shorter time frame, the half-day camps have a condensed curriculum, while the full-day classes usually sail in the morning and afternoon so they get more time on the water. We place 2-3 sailors per boat to ensure comfort and safety. Each instructor supervises eight or fewer sailors.
Depending on enrollment, the full-day class is split into two or more groups based on age, experience and friends who sign up together. The half-day class is usually a single group.
Note that daily sailing is not guaranteed. If conditions are unsafe due to wind or weather, we’ll play games and learn on shore.

Once sailors have mastered the skills taught in Explorers, they are ready to move on to Optimist Cruisers.
